There's No Place Like Home: Steps to Becoming a Stay-At-Home Mom
Published in Paperback by Broadman & Holman Publishers (July, 2001)
Authors: Mary Larmoyeux, Ethan Pope, and Beverly LaHaye
Average review score:

The only place to be is home
This book was helpful in some aspects. It gave some
advice on how to transition to being a stay at home mom. In addition, it gave scriptural references which for me were uplifing and encouraging. However, the authors repeatedly made me feel as though it was totally "ungodly" if you work outside the home to make ends meet. That, for me, was the only negative aspect.

To Die in Beverly Hills
Published in Paperback by Virtual Publishing (15 November, 2001)
Author: Gerald Petievich
Average review score:

Not his best work
Gerald Petievich's "To Die in Beverly Hills" is not one of his best works of writing. But it does have some strong points.

As can be expected, it is about the Secret Service. (Mr. Petievich is a former agent and uses this past experience to his advantage).

The problem with the book is that it is a very predictable. It was written almost as if he was rushed to write "something". He is a very detailed orientated writer but it wasn't used to its fullest in this book.

He hasn't written a book since 1991 but I do hope he writes a new book soon!

Undercover Cowboy (Silhouette Intimate Moments, No 711)
Published in Paperback by Harlequin (May, 1996)
Author: Beverly Bird
Average review score:

Pretty fluffy read
This book was definitely a light read. The "hero", Jack, didn't do much heroic throughout the book. I didn't have that "Whoah, I want this guy on my side" feeling through most of the book because he primarily watched "the bad guy" without having much interaction with him until the end. The main female character, Carly, was the typical smart, tough girl beaten down by circumstances. The premise of the cattle drive seemed far-fetched. I couldn't understand why the Feds, knowing they had their "bad guy" and the money, let innocent people go off into the wilderness with a highly successful assassin and only one man to watch over them. And, even more important than that, when Carly was undressing Jack, how did she manage to get his jeans off BEFORE his boots? Now that's a good question!

Becoming a Teacher
Published in Hardcover by Allyn & Bacon (January, 1995)
Authors: Forrest W. Parkay, Beverly Hardcastle Standford, and Beverly Hardcastle Stanford
Average review score:

Liberal Propaganda
If I could have given this book zero stars, I would have. This book is nothing more than liberal propaganda, promoting the Freudian ways that have invaded our classrooms, and ensuring that our nation's teachers-to-be will be as clueless and incompetant as to how to actually teach children. Of all the varying standpoints on issues in education, the book only briefly talks about conservative opinions, and goes at length about liberal ones; it doesn't even try to be middle of the road. If you want to ensure that our children will continue to fail in school, go ahead and buy this book, if not, save your money.

Overpriced and not honest enough
No book can fully relate what it is like to become a teacher. Do you want to know what teaching's really like? Sit in for a week at a school, preferably the kind of school that beginning teachers usually get their start in (read: poor ones). Observe the classes. Talk to the teachers. Talk to the administrators. Talk to the kids. Tell them to be honest with you. One week of that will tell you more about teaching and education today than this book.

Good overview on the system
This book is good for anyone who wants to be in a teaching professional in secondary level. It provides almost every aspect of the professional. I found it very helpful to understand what lies ahead if I want to teach. It might not be suitable to use as mentor. It didn't discuss much about what is going on in school but more on what to expect. A good resource for any beginning teacher.

The Sunroom
Published in Hardcover by Bethany House (April, 1998)
Author: Beverly Lewis
Average review score:

HORRIBLE! Shame on Beverly Lewis!
This was the most awful and depressing book I have ever read. I don't understand how Beverly Lewis ever got it published! Who would like it? People who constantly want to feel sorry for themselves, that's who! It was supposed to be based on her childhood, you would have thought she could have made it more interesting than that. Read "The Postcard" and "The Crossroad", which are beautifully written, but don't lay a finger on this one! If you should be so unfortunate to get it as a gift, please run screaming for the hills!

A 12 yr old girl sacrifices -proving her love for her mother
12 yr. old Becky loves God, her Mother, and her tremendously talented piano playing. Being the older of 2 girls in her family, she tries to set a Godly example for her younger sister by maturing during the absence of their young mother. The thing she wants most is for her Mother to get well and return home and she thinks she can strike a bargain with God to bring this about. Her father is the pastor of their small church and struggles with his wife's illness, his responsibilities to his church and the welfare of his 2 daughters. Becky is sure the Sunroom must be a beautiful place and wishes she could visit her mother in person there, but first she has to live up to her end of the bargain with God. This is not easy, considering she has offered to completely give up the one thing that consumes her thoughts, fills her lonely time and brings her some measure of peace!

A precious story with a surprising ending...
Beverly Lewis is an extremely gifted "Christian" writer, obviously focusing her talents on conveying messages in wholesome, respectful manners. This is a beautiful yet heart-wrenching story of a young girl's struggle with life, death, and change. There are many lessons about love, trust, and faith to be learned in reading this simple yet elegant acccount. You will weep, then rejoice in the final chapters. I highly recommend this book to anyone with a heart.

Rape Warfare: The Hidden Genocide in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Minnesota Pr (Txt) (February, 1996)
Author: Beverly Allen
Average review score:

Terrible Book
Allen knows zilch about the Balkans, knows nothing about the war, prattles on incessantly about herself. Seems she heard some horrifying stories of mass rapes from acquaintances and decided to write about how bad that made her feel. That's it. If you care about that, then this book is for you.

Not a Great Book
After reading the book, I read all of the reviews below. This book isn't as bad as the worst critics make it out to be, but it's not as good as the apologists purport. It's just another read. If you get assigned it for a feminist class, relax, read it, and move on. It's a strange book because it's not really about Bosnia - not having much to offer about politics or the war. It's not about sexual politics - being just another feminist screed. But it's mostly about the writer's own personal thoughts on rape as a military tool. If that interests you, you'll enjoy the book. If not, you probably won't be able to finish it.

Take Note: An Influential Book
Rape Warfare was a courageous book to write: Beverly Allen dared to speak out about how rape was being used systematically before 'historical consensus' had validated that claim. Thus it became an influential and historically significant work, credited today with having been instrumental in the U.N. War Crimes Tribunal's decision to change international law so that war rape might now be prosecuted as a "crime against humanity." The very first convictions under this new law were handed down in February 2001.

Incidentally, some reader reviewers, apparently not up-to-date on recent strides in research approaches, failed to grasp the importance of the inclusion in Rape Warfare of Dr. Allen's personal responses, especially considering the situation on the ground in the Balkans at that time. The information coming from interviews is always shaped by the attitudes and expectations of the interviewer. Thus it becomes the interviewer's duty to both REVEAL and SITUATE the details of her/his own subjectivity.

By withholding the gruesome details of the rapes, Allen protected the women she interviewed; she spared them the kind of re-victimization they experience when journalists pander to public prurience, making pornography of these women's horrors. Nonetheless, or perhaps even, therefore, Rape Warfare is also 'about' the power of stories; it makes a significant contribution to demonstrating that narrative, often disqualified as "not objective," is, in fact, a valid tool for discovering the deepest truths.

[Susan Schwartz Senstad is the author of MUSIC FOR THE THIRD EAR (Picador, 2001), which treats the fate of, among others, a Croatian woman who seeks asylum in Norway after being subjected to the mass rapes in Bosnia.]

Beverly Hills, 90210: Television, Gender, and Identity (Feminist Cultural Studies, the Media, and Political Culture)
Published in Paperback by University of Pennsylvania Press (September, 1997)
Author: E. Graham McKinley
Average review score:

Not what I thought it would be
I am an avid fan of "Beverly Hills 90210," and I thought that this book would be a perfect combination of intellectuality and my love of pop culture. I was sadly mistaken.

This book nearly put me to sleep. Although I thought it was interesting to read scenes that I had viewed myself and read other people's reactions to them, I was quite bored by all of the technical reading in it. I figured it would be more analysis and study rather than just a presentation of the facts. I would definitely NOT recommend this as something that anyone should buy.

HOW COULD A SHOW HOLD SO WELL FOR TEN YEARS
THE BOOK EXPLAINS WELL ALL THE ISSUES AND CHARACTER BUILDING DURING YEARS OF THE SHOW. SOME OF THE CHAPTERS ARE HARD TO FINISH BECAUSE THEY GO IN DEEP THOUGHTS ABOUT WOMEN, AND IDENTITY MAKING IT SOUD LIKE A TEXT BOOK, BUT AFTER I FINISH THOSE CHAPTERS I RELAIZED HOW IMPORTANT THEY WERE IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND THE SUCESS OF THE SHOW, THE TECNIQUE OF THE WRITERS AND PRODUCERS OF THE SHOW. AS A SHOW BUSINESS LOVER AND WORKER I RECOMEND THE BOOK TO EVERY WOMAN AND TV PROFESSIONAL.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (Kw Series , No 193s)
Published in Paperback by TFH Publications (October, 1995)
Authors: Beverley Cuddy and Beverly Cuddy
Average review score:

too generic for the breed.
This book has the basics but it is obvious that Four Paws has their hands in this. The book advertises Four Paws Products and the rest is basics. This book is not written from a knowledgable viewpoint. It is a bunch of hype. There are other MUCH better written books on the breed. My favorite is a new book by well known breeder of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Barbara Garnet-Smith. I've recommendend her book to all my new puppy owners.

beautiful pictures and much basic information
I loved this book. So many beautiful pictures of the cavalier king charles. I am the proud owner of Lily, 8mths old and the book helped me tremendously when it came to basic information. HOw to house train, what to feed her, how to bathe her. I highly recomend this book.

Applying to Medical School for the Non-Traditional Student
Published in Paperback by Bryan Goss (01 August, 1997)
Authors: Bryan Goss, Beverly Goss, Peter Goss, and Bryan W. Goss
Average review score:

Don't bother.
I was hoping to find more in-depth information in this book, such as how to brush up on science if you've been out of school for awhile and how to juggle family and med school. Instead, it was just a bunch of interviews with med students who, as the other reviewers have noted, all went to the same medical schools and had similar backgrounds. Besides, most of the info you need can be found online for free - just Google "medical student" and see what comes up.

NO ONE LIKE ME....I WANT MY MONEY BACK
I bought this book, as a non-traditional student, with great hopes of hearing stories of people who have had the same anxieties as myself. Unforunately, what I found was a poorly put together group of people who almost all came from some kind of health-care background or medical legacy. The only thing that made these people non-traditional was the fact that they were older. I was hoping for a book full of artists and business people who decided to switch paths, but all I found were stories of phamaceutical reps and EMTs. Aside from subject matter, there isn't a wide range of questions or answers. Basically, if you read one interview, you've read them all. There are so many other books that give an eclectic view of the non-traditional student. Save your money. You'll need it in med-school.

Great insight into different routes to medical school
This is not a book that tells you how to gain acceptance into medical school, or what kind of MCAT score or GPA you should have. It is a collection of interviews with different people who all decided to go to medical school after they had completed their undergraduate degree. As a nontraditional prospective medical applicant, I enjoyed reading how other people came to the decision to go to medical school and how they went about it. It would have been nice if the author had interviewed people at different schools. The majority of the people in the book went to Northwestern Medical School and did their post-bac premed work at Loyola. However, the author does interview an interesting mix of people, and each one of their stories is unique. Again, this book is only for those who want to read interviews about people who have already gone through the application process and been accepted to medical school. There is scant information on how to get admitted yourself.

Chihuahuas
Published in Hardcover by Tfh Publications ()
Author: Beverly Pisano
Average review score:

stay away from this book!
Ninety percent of this book is not specific to chihuahuas. It is as though the author wrote 25 pages about chihuahuas and just pasted it into a generic book about dogs. After the first 25 pages, the rest of this book addresses dog selection, house-breaking, health care, breeding, dog shows, and more.

Although most of the content in these sections can be applied to chihuahuas--some of it is misleading.

For example, there is no mention in the feeding section about problems that chihuahuas can have with hypoglycemia. Also, a life expectancy chart is shown that goes up to 21 years old. However, it would be a rare chihuahua to live that long. What's worse, is that a choke collar is mentioned in the section about training. Because chihuahuas are small and it does not take much pressure to damage their tracheas, you would NEVER use a choke collar on a chihuahua. Even the information about using a leash and collar is a little dubious. (It's safer to walk chihuahuas with a leash and harness.)

Unfortunately, the only thing I can recommend about this book are the photographs.

Buy a Different Chihuahua Book
Worst Chihuahua Book I have yet to read (and I read every one I can get my hands on). It was hard for me to even finish reading. There are SO MANY BETTER books to buy with much better information about chihuahuas. Just about any books concerning Chihuahuas are indeed better, especially for the first time owner. Not recommended!

Excellent!
Very helpful information. This has been a very helpful book for the first year with my first Chihuahua. In the beginning I referred to it many times and now I refer to it ocassionally for the needs of all my dogs. This is the best book on Chihuahuas I have found.
